With all of the different eyelash growth serums on the market, it can be overwhelming trying to find the best formula that’s effective at growing longer, fuller lashes, and safe for your skin, too. Luckily, your search can end here! Unlike other popular lash growth serums that use problematic prostaglandins (more on that later), our dermatologist-approved eyelash serum uses nourishing, natural ingredients to promote longer, thicker lashes.
To shed some light on lash serum safety, we’re giving you the full scoop on the best natural eyelash growth serum, how to use lash serum correctly, and why you should avoid prostaglandin lash serums.
Why Our Eyelash Serum Is Safe
1.It’s Prostaglandin Free
If you’ve picked up a popular eyelash growth serum online or from your local pharmacy, there is a good percent chance that it contains prostaglandins. What exactly are prostaglandins? These hormone-like substances affect several bodily functions and can stimulate hair follicles to grow longer, darker lashes when applied to the eyelashes.
Prostaglandin is widely known as being the active ingredient in Latisse, the only FDA-approved prescription eyelash growth serum. The compound is used to prolong hair’s anagen (aka the active growth) phase, thus stimulating lash growth. While prostaglandins are naturally occurring in the body, that doesn’t mean they’re risk-free.
Using lash growth serums with prostaglandins can increase your risk of developing prostaglandin associated periorbitopathy and other unwanted side effects. These include:
- Orbital fat loss
- Eyelid drooping and facial asymmetry
- Eyelid itching, redness, or irritation
- Skin discoloration around the eyelid and lashline
- Permanent dark spots in the iris, especially for those with light green or blue eyes
- Loss of lash length and fullness once you stop using prostaglandins
While some of these side effects are temporary and can subside once you stop using a prostaglandin-based lash serum, others are permanent.
Our Eyelash Serum is an all-natural and safe alternative to prostaglandin lash-enhancing serums that still give you impactful results—without the potential side effects! Terez & Honor never (and will never) use prostaglandins in our products. Instead, we utilize clinically backed natural ingredients like peptides to promote longer, thicker lashes.
2.Backed by Testing
Like all our products, the lash serum has passed rigorous testing, including repeated insult patch testing (RIPT), which found the serum to have no potential dermal irritation or allergic contact sensitization. Our products are also backed by esteemed dermatologists, like Dr. Lejla Cirkic MD, FAAD, for their clean, effective, and safe formulas.
In other words, yes! The Terez and Honor Eyelash Serum is very safe and gentle enough for those with sensitive skin.
3.Clinically Proven Ingredients
Peptides are the hero ingredient in our eyelash serum. These amino acid chains are an ultra-safe (and ultra-effective) alternative to grow your eyelashes without potential risks. Cosmetic chemist Marisa Plescia says peptides “help activate keratin production to promote thicker and healthier-looking lashes, and through other complicated biological mechanisms, can help protect hair follicles and prevent hair loss.”
We use a multi-peptide complex with tried-and-true peptides for optimum results:
- Myristoyl Pentapeptide-4 is a powerful peptide used to promote hair growth.
- Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17 is a hydrating peptide known for nourishing hair follicles, stimulating keratin production, and thickening eyelashes.
- Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1 is a strengthening peptide that fortifies and conditions for stronger, healthier-looking eyelashes.
In addition to clinically proven peptides, our lash serum contains conditioning ingredients like aloe vera, panthenol, and glycerin that naturally moisturize your lashes to help prevent breakage. As well as high-impact vitamins and plant-powered botanicals rich in nutrients that support natural growth.
I’m experiencing irritation…is that normal?
The Terez and Honor Lash Serum is safe for all skin types and has no side effects. That being said, getting any product too close to your eye can cause irritation. According to ophthalmologist Nicky Shah, MD., “Eyelash serum is not going to harm your eye health if it gets into your eye, but you can get irritation in your eyes, like stinging or redness.” If you accidentally get lash serum directly in your eye, immediately rinse with lukewarm water.
Applying lash serum correctly is key for a safe and effective application free of irritation. For a step-by-step guide on how to apply lash serum safely, keep scrolling!
How to Apply Lash Serum Safely
For best results, it’s recommended to apply your Terez & Honor Eyelash and Brow Serum twice per day, in the morning and evening, consistently for four to six weeks. Here’s how:
Step 1: Remove All Eye Makeup
You always want to start with clean lashes before application. Use a gentle cleanser to remove all mascara and eye makeup. If you’re using an oil-based cleanser, consider double cleansing with a water-based face wash or micellar water to remove left-behind oils that can prevent the serum from absorbing.
If you wear contact lenses, remove them before application to prevent any serum from coming in contact with your lenses.
Step 2: Apply to Upper Lash Line
Our lash serum features a precision applicator for targeted, effortless application. Using the fine brush applicator, apply the serum along the upper lash line similarly to how you would apply a liquid eyeliner. Do NOT apply the lash serum directly on the lashes or waterline. The serum will work its way to the lashes, so you don’t have to worry about applying it too close.
You only need a thin coat of serum per application. If you’ve applied too much, gently blot away any excess serum that can run into your eyes.
Step 3: Let It Dry
The hard part is done! All you have to do now is wait 2 to 3 minutes for the serum to dry before closing your eyes or applying any other products. If you wear contacts, wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in to prevent any reactions.
Additional Tip:
It’s also important to keep your applicator tip clean. Prevent germ or bacteria contamination by keeping your applicator tip off surfaces like the sink or countertop.
Choosing a natural lash serum made from clean, efficacious ingredients rather than ones with prostaglandins is the best way to grow your lashes. Try our Enhancing Eyelash Serum to get beautiful, fluttery lashes (and avoid potential side effects!).
